As soon as the Lighthouse Service was established in the early nineteenth century, it acknowledged the exceptional architectural and historical nature of the Cordouan site. Considerable engineering efforts were expended: it was heavily restored under the Second Empire and in 1862 it became a listed historical monument. For a long time, Cordouan was the only lighthouse granted this status.
