- The modernisation of Cordouan in the 19th century
During the course of the nineteenth century, maritime signalling made both quantitative and qualitative leaps forward. Although it no longer served as a laboratory for scholars and engineers, Cordouan felt the effects of these changes. A Lighthouse Service managed the network from Paris, where the craftspeople who had designed the original prototypes built plants. Technical innovation moved so quickly that Fresnel's original apparatus quickly became a museum piece.
